Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) appeared at European Union (EU) level for the first time in the “Blue Paper” on an Integrated Maritime Policy for the EU in 2007, as one of the horizontal and cross-sectoral tools supporting its implementation. After years of discussions, as well as various official EU communications, Maritime Spatial Planning has been given legislative force by Directive 2014/89/EU, which all coastal Member States are required to implement. Since then, much has been done in this direction, and today Maritime Spatial Planning is called upon to play an important role in enhancing sustainable Blue Development, but also in achieving the European Green Deal.
