Municipality of Piraeus

The municipality of Piraeus is the 5th biggest city in the country according to the latest data from population census (2011), its national port, and a well-known municipality with a history in blue economy activities. Recently, Piraeus has been promoted as a hub of the blue economy in Greece and in the East Med area. In particular:

It is the biggest port center of the country and a metropolitan center in the region with a significant comparative advantage for the development of the blue economy with a significant role as a shipping hub between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

It is one of Europe’s most important and fastest-growing ports.

Piraeus is among the busiest ten ports in Europe in terms of container traffic, and one of the busiest container ports in the Eastern Mediterranean. Furthermore, it is one of the largest ports globally in terms of annually passenger’s transportation.

It is the commercial hub of Greek Shipping as the headquarters of many shipping companies or other marine activities, are located in the city. Networking is a key priority of the marine ecosystem with international recognition of its Blue Economy and innovation activities and events.

A lot of cultural and tourist sites are located in the city.

The University of Piraeus is one of the largest universities in Greece and includes the country's second-oldest business school, as well as the oldest academic department dedicated to the study of marine activities.

It is the country’s main transportation hub connected by road and rail to the main transport routes of the country, the EU , the Asia and Africa.

In 2018, the city of Piraeus (EL) puts in place its “Blue Growth Strategy” (2018-2024), an integrated territorial developmental strategy with more than  80.5 million euros funds and different axes of priorities that aims to create a new city identity of Piraeus as an Innovative, Competitive and Resilient Center for the Organization and Development of Blue Economy in the  EU and globally. As such, one of its key objectives, is to be a “hub for informing and disseminating knowledge and information on innovative Blue Entrepreneurship matters and Blue  Sustainable Growth”
